Fursuit Games Thread!

Hello everyone!
My name is Ronin Otter and I will be your host this year for the Anthrocon fursuit games! Last year I temporarily handed off the torch to my pal LuckyDog who did a spectacular job running them in my stead. My hat is off to him for taking on that commitment last minute due to sudden schedule changes which forced me to leave the convention early.

This year, I will be on premises for the entire duration, so it’s up to me to try and do at least half as good a job as Lucky pulled off for us.

Some of you might be asking “What in the world are the fursuit games?” Good question! The answer is: “A group participation event at the con which will be comprised of several team-based physical challenges.” This can be easily translated to “A bunch of fursuiters running around in a semi-organized fashion to accomplish the vague outlines of a goal, while probably cheating and having a bunch of fun in the process.” The fursuit games are, obviously, for people in fursuit only, whether partial or full. The games will be comprised of numerous relay races, silly stunts, and games you might remember playing in your younger days. Performing these seemingly simple tasks while wearing a restrictive costume makes them much more challenging, and therefore makes the ensuing antics really fun to watch for everyone involved!

For those of you considering participating in the Fursuit Games this year, good for you! It's a group-participation event which benefits exponentially by the more costumes that show up. If you’re just curious and want to show up and maybe start participating as things progress, that’s fine too! I’m going to have volunteers helping out to give you a team “tag” and shuffle you into the action when the next game starts.

Following is a list of games which I usually have in the mix. This isn’t a finalized list at all, so I’m looking for your input! If you’ve got an idea for a game that you think would work really well, post it here, and if it sounds fun, safe and reasonable to pull off in a fursuit, I might have it on the final list!

Also, if there are any of you willing to help out, be sure to get in touch with Con Ops once the convention has started and get yourself a volunteer badge. I’ll be tapping into the con volunteer base in order to get assistance running the event. I’ll need plenty of help, so thank you in advance!

Preliminary Game Brainstorm List: (This list will grow as the con approaches)
• Dizzy race: Relay where each team member has to spin around a funnoodle 3 times, then run a slalom through a set of cones, gets his or her self through a hula-hoop, and runs back! The player then tags the next one in line until all team members finish.
• The Limbo: Pretty self explanatory if you ask me, with a limbo bar for each team, racing to see who finishes first.
• Hula-Hoop Hoedown: Each team is lined up and all members hold paws. A hula-hoop has to be gotten all the way down the line without any mascots paws releasing! The good news is, each team has one member they choose to help get the hoop down the line.
• Musical Chairs: Depending on who you are, this is either your most or least favorite game. Due to overwhelming demand to bring it back, I’m putting it on this list. If you’re for or against having it at the games, post your reasons! If we do end up playing it, we’re going to have strict rules about roughhousing to prevent damage to suits and injury to players. Playing this game will depend on whether our union friends will allow us to move chairs around in the space without their assistance. This is a big problem because failing to return the room's arrangement to exactly what it was before will incur a fine to Anthrocon, and I don't want a raging cockroach on our paws. Eye-wink
• Gryphon Egg Carry: Using a pair of salad tongs, each player must carry a gryphon egg (substituted with a baseball so 2 doesn’t kill us) all the way down from one end of the course and back, handing it off to the next player in line.
• Time Ball: Teams lines up with the first player a little distance back from the line. Each team has a leader who stands on the line facing his/her team with the ball. The ball is thrown to the first member of the team who catches it, and then runs with it to around the rest of their team back to their position. Then, they throw the ball back to the team leader and sit down. The leader throws the ball back over the first player’s head to the second team member who catches it, and repeats the process. The winning team is the one to have their last team member throw the ball back to the leader and sit down. (Don’t worry, everyone else on the team can help with the throwing part.)
• Woodchuck, Woodchuck, MOOSE: This is basically just duck-duck-goose, except the emcee will be calling out the labels as the contestant walks the circle, tapping the other players on the head. (Emphasis on tapping) When "MOOSE!" is called, the standing player has to run around the circle and claim the vacant spot left by the mascot they tapped on the head, who must try and overtake the original player. This game requires a lot of available space, so it will be dependent upon how many costumes we have.

More ideas coming! Let’s hear yours!

Red Rover: Game out of people's childhood(or parenthood). Everyone lines up in two(or more if you wish) teams, and lines up facing the other team while holding hands with the people next to them. Then one team calls out the name(or whatever) of someone on the other team. That person must then charge across the gap and attempt to make it past the joined hands of the other team. If they succeed, they go back to their side. If they fail to, they are dragooned into the other team. First team to run out of players(or not have enough to successfully hold the line), loses.

There will need to be some kind of rule on how hard you can hit people's arms with this, I've seen plently of kids(including myself several times), get hurt playing this game.

Red Rover is another one I've heard requested, and I've poked around to see if people have tried it in the past. There are two few major setbacks with playing Red Rover in a fursuit competition:
1. It requires someone knowing all the opposing team's names, whether it's the emcee or the players. No one is going to know all of the names of all the fursuiters, and it's not quite fair to only call out a handful of suits that you recognize and have the other players left out. Plus, even if we get lucky that a player knows a large percentage of the costumes, they can't be heard shouting out through their costume.
2. Red Rover, while lots of fun, is a very physical game which depends on overpowering the strength and tenacity of your opponent(s) using speed and collisions. In a fursuit, this means costume damage and personal injury due to lack of vision and colliding with the wrong thing or person. Trying to make a rule of "don't hit hard" won't make the game very playable, and is a hard rule to follow to boot.
Since safety is my #1 concern when doing physical games, I don't think Red Rover is going to work. Sorry! Sad I'd love to see it too, but being a fursuit owner myself with a head that is unable to see straight ahead (and therefore what I'm running towards) I know this would be pretty much impossible to pull off with any degree of safety.

Ohhhhhh, this so makes me wish i could get a fursuit NOW instead of having to wait to gather up the money and then spend it and then wait for the nice people who make the fursuits (also see: LITTLE ELVES & GNOMES) to make it.

Okay, I've got one. It started out with a idea about karaoke, but then I realized that some people have horrible singing voices and I didn't want to make everyone's ear bleed from other's horrible singing. So, the idea I have is, play music over a speaker, and have whoever is up dance/mime to it. Then at the end of each round, have the audience vote by round of applause which one they like.

I checked with the DLCC about "Musical Chairs." If we held the event in the Convention Center, the Union guys would have to do the initial chair setup for us, but we would be allowed to take the chairs away ourselves.

Just to throw out ideas, here were the games we had at the Sunday fursuit games at Megaplex:

Limbo: Was the warm up and not a real contest. Just something fun to get everyone jazzed about the games.

Atari's Revenge: We had "Missle Command" nerf missles, whiffle ball "Asteroids", and Frisbee "Space Invaders". Suiters took turns launching their objects toward two members of the opposing team. The two suiters had to catch as many objects as they could without letting them hit the ground.

Easter Egg hunt: the floor was covered with 150 different colored easter eggs. Each team was given a pair of salad tongs, and had to collect each of the 6 colored eggs in order before beginning to collect the remaining eggs. If an egg broke in half, it was out of play. Team with the most egss won.

Kickball relay: Each team was given a softside kickball. They had to get the ball down to a cone at the end of the room then go around the cone and return it to the next waiting team member. First team for all players to get the ball up and down the track won.

Dizzy Bats: Played as described in the intial post on this thread.

Hands Free Relay: Each team had a kickball. Two suiters from each team needed to get the ball around the cone at the end of the room and back to the next waiting pair. The trick was, they were not allowed to use hands, arms or feet while transporting the ball down the field. First team to have all its players get the ball up and down the field won.

Musical chairs: This wasn't our first choice due to potential for injury...but our props for the final game went missing...so we substituted musical chairs. It went well, but may not be the best choice for AC.

Just food for thought:

Red light green light!!!: a grade school game. a person faces a wall at the opposite side of the room from everyone else. they say "green light", then the people behind him/her move toward him/her. then they yell "red light" and turn around simultaneously. if they see anyone move, that person goes back to the wall. the object is to make it to the person against the wall without being seen moving

would make something interesting to see, a bunch of fursuiters moving across a room at various speeds, then freezing... I keep seeing fursuiters crawling across the room on all fours XD. would have to make a rule about tails.. they shouldnt count because i know how hard it can be to gt them ot stop when you want them to.

Capture the Tail/Flag- Very basic game played in a square field/area. A flag/tail/object is hidden on each side and each team needs to get their flag to their side of the field/area. A tag sends that player to the "jail" and if one member of their team can get to the jail without being tagged, all of them get a free walk back to their side. 3 captures wins

May I suggest... tug of war!

The rule's simple, it's fun, and spectacular finishes to be expected!

May I suggest "Gryphon May I?" A pre-school game I used to love where there would be one designated "mother - aka Gryphon" at the farthest side who has the ultimate power in this game. The game is to see who can get to her / him the fastest with needing to follow the rules. If "Gryphon / mother" says No you may not.. And you move.. You get sent back to the beginning and have to start over while others are ahead.
(Maybe Kage can play the role as mother! Shall be quite interesting xD)

Another game that would be interesting "Gryphon Says.." Your basic Simon Says game.. Where you're only allowed to do as told if the designated person says "Gryphon Says"
If you do what has beed said and the gryphon does not say "Gryphon Says" You lose and sit out...
Ex: "Gryphon Says touch your snout!"
You would then touch your snout.

BUT!

If the gryphon says "Touch your snout" and you touch your snout.. You're out of the game because he didn't say "Gryphon Says to touch your snout"

I also thought of the game 7 up.. Choosing 7 fursuiters to be the ones standing while the others sit down and lay their head down, NOT allowed to peak! Or they lose and are out of the game.. The game is to lay your head down and stick up your thumb while the 7 chosen Fursuiters walk around and choose ONLY ONE furry to put their thumb down.. After all furries are done choosing the ones that they wanted, they'll tell everyone to rise their head as the ones who have their thumbs down try to figure out WHICH furry put their thumb down.. If choosen the wrong Furry.. You lose and have to sit back down again and lay your head down..
If you chose the right furry, you get to join them in the process of going around to choose ONE furry to put their thumb down.
(You would need chairs and tables for this game, but I think would be possible to use just chairs.. only problem I see if you get the cheaters who will peak through their suit anyways to try to win..) A lot more fun when you go by the rules and end up the last trying to figure out of ALL of the furries, which one put your thumb down.

I will post more when I can manage to think of any... Hope this helps ^.^

I remember a game we used to play in gym class called "steal the bacon" you have 2 teams and one player from each team at a time competes to get the "bacon" in the middle of them. We used to play it so the class was slipt in 2 teams and everyone lined up on opposite sides of the basketball court facing a person from the other team accross from them. The teacher would drop Red rags down the middle of the court and on the count of 3 blow the whistle - Then each player runs towards the middle to grab the rag and run back to their end of the court. The team with the most pieces of "bacon" won.

volleyball with an enormous beachball (for the furrs in full fursuit and limited vision) and more traditional for those that don have a head or something or something that has a better feild of vision and arent affraid of the head getting messed up (i don sugest useing a fursuit head when playing with a real volleyball. ive had one spiked into the side of my face and it hurts and would deff break most fursuit heads) hence useing a large beachball possibl filled with a slightly heaver inert gass jus so were not waiting for hours for it to come down form the air and so it actually goes across the net. (i sugest argon but id double check to make sure thats a good choice)

All give some, but some give all.
you will not be forgoten

Actually, last year we had a fursuit dodgeball event. Despite our stern warnings, some people got out of hand. The management of the DLCC was very cross with us, and made us promise that we'd allow no further events that involved any sort of projectile.

No, it doesn't matter that it's "Just a beachball." No thrown objects, no projectiles of any kind.

Out of curiosity, what about that giant foam frisby someone had last year? It did get out of control every so often, but it was soft enough that if someone else didn't grab it first, it just bounced lightly off of things.

From what i recall hearing last year, though, even with really light stuff that shouldn't have broken anything...stuff got broken.

Kage and the board are the final word on this, of course, but i have a feeling that they won't want to figure out which items are or aren't heavy enough to knock something over and break it.

There is, of course, plenty of room for us folks to play with foam frisbees and the like outside, and a park nearby that would be perfect for that.

i can't wait! *giggles* these games are going to be sooo much fun! hehe

also, some suggestions,
1) 7-up: everyone puts their head down on the one team (2 teams total) and puts their thumbs up. the other team goes around and places one fur's thumb down. then when everyone is done they sit back down. the first team lifts their heads and have to guess which fur put down their thumb. if they get it right, they switch spots.
2) leap frog. i just think that would be real funny with fursuits hehe
3) Simon says.
and i def. agree with tug-a-war and red light, green light.

this is going to be REAL interesting hehe

Catch me, if you can! >^.^<

Not to be a downer but, leap frog in suit could get kinda dangerous. and as for 7-up, how can you know if people don't peak, fursuit heads are large and some may peek and see a foot/paw.

That's just it, you never know if someone peaks in 7-Up
