god I swear every year I have to pull more strings and wait on teh fence until a month prior to the con before making one important decision. "Should I go to AC?" this brings up questions like: can I afford it, where will I be in 8 months (other than pittsburgh) can I find a job before then and save money? do I want roomies off the ac message board again (AAAGH!), and most imprtantly "is it worth missing just 1 year?"

Welp, I suppose I can miss this next year cnsidering I'm graduating college in June and have to score a job right off the bat to pay off student loans. The fact is I work in the hospitality industry, cooking, which is anything but a 9-5 job. More like a 6am to 5pm or 4pm to 11pm any random days of the week, EVEN HOLIDAYS LIKE THE 4TH OF JULY! Needless to say... bad timing this year for me and I dunno if I can weasle my way out of working on a very busy holiday weekend.

But on teh flipside I MUST be here at ac 09, I want to see us graduate to hall B, grow larger, and see the people I've met at previous cons again and kage's story hour and 2's rant, metal furs, and other three dozen things taht make AC as addictive as crack.

So... help? suggestions? Should I throw caution to the wind and book that room at the Westin?

I'd wait on booking the room; the Westin is nowhere near full yet, and there is also the Doubletree: not that far at all, and chocolate chip cookies when you check in.

Trust me as someone who works the cooking industry and knows how troublesome it is to get that time off. (Thankfully, with my new job, it won't be an issue in 2009...).

I'd say wait; hopefully you'll be able to attend but you won't need to make the decision on that just yet. Smiling

I was lost on the part where you said you were lookin' for a job and you had a job cookin'.
I guess you meant lookin' for new job after graduating.
If this is true, i'd stay with your current job as a cook even after graduating.
Why,because you've been working there and most likely they'll give you that week off.
Better request now and not later, that'll give em time to see what they can do for you.
If you decided to changed job after graduating,it's not advisable as most employers will need you to be there as your going through probation period, you'll get dinged for alot of things. Asking the week off is like the same as requesting a raise when you just got this job. That's pushing your luck.

An alternative is to work 2 jobs. The other that you are on call and no commitment(no set schedule)type of job such as valet attendant or a gig. I believe you have a posted determined schedule from your cooking job from week to week even though times changes on any days. Armed with that info you can find jobs around that.Long days but better as you have job security in this format. What if hours are cut? Atleast you have a backup job or worst looking for one.

The secret is in you.....

rar...
that's kinda what I ment. when I graduate I have to leave this area, I live in a dorm, and find work. and unfortunatly that intial period where you shouldn;t ask for time off occurs right at that time AC falls into. I got a lucky break in 07 but I'm looking at possibly getting my old job back at a country club and there's no way in hell I'd get that weekend off. somethign about 500+ hungry country club members on the green shouts ALL HANDS ON DECK!

That's a double wamie.
I guess focusing on your job and career is more important than attending a con.
There's always next year or in this case the following next year.
The secret is in you.....
