Why Anthrocon?
|
Hello everyone ^^ One who is interested in anthropomorphic animals seems to be the general definition but it seems too simple to be just that... Anyway, to the point of this thread. I'd just like to know, what you do you guys like about anthrocon specifically? What's the draw? What makes it most fun for you? What are your favorite events or displays? Or even, what do you love about the furry community that keeps you drawn to it? Thanks to whoever responds, assuming anyone does. >< |
) and not much else, though I'm very interested so I guess that makes me a furry?

and what i find about the fandom itself is it can be combined with vuirtaly any other intrest and there will more than likely be annother fur with that intrest so if you look hard enouph you will find furrs like you. and that my friend is why.

Seconded. And not just friends, but friends with a common interest!
In my experience, friendships that I have with other furries tend to run deeper than friendships with non-furrys. Probably because we already have furry itself in common.

There are three main reasons I come to Anthrocon, and as I've said, "I really wish there were three of me to do everything at this con."
The first is the social reason- the first thing that drew me there, seeing friends and making new ones, enjoying the relaxed convention atmosphere, and getting to speak with people I normally only type at.
The second is the artistic reason- there's wonderful art and creative works to purchase, for myself or for gifts, prints, originals, commissions, shirts, books, comics.. the list goes on.
The third is the work reason- which, is less a case for most people, but darn it, I enjoy working at Anthrocon. It make me happy knowing that I have been and will be a help to others sot hat they have a wonderful time at the convention.

I go because I get paid so well to work there.
Wait...what? I don't get paid? Volunteer? No one told me this!
In seriousness, though - I go because it's a great group of people and there's a fantastic positive energy to the convention. I work at Anthrocon because it's a fascinating logistical challenge. It's also a joy to work with the talented and dedicated staff of the convention. The feeling of accomplishment when it's over somehow buoys me for the next twelve months when I'm ready to do it all over again.

Just Giza?
Anyway, why I go to AC... well... my friends are there. Hundreds of them. Even if I get to see my friends for only a few seconds, I feel that it was worth it. It's precious time I only get to have so often. And for some, once every few years.
Were it not for my friends, I may have not had a real reason to go to Anthrocon, but then again, some of the best friends I have I made friendships with them at Anthrocon. Now they're like brothers and sisters to me. I never know what I'd do without them. I'm quite thankful for my friends.
It helps making fun... funner. ^_^

--I'd just like to know, what you do you guys like about anthrocon specifically?--
I love the sheer number of people that show up! I mean, who knew there were that many people interested in the idea of animal people, whatever level of attraction
--What's the draw?--
Well part of it is all the cool suits/art and funny things you see. At one point my friend Baka Sukonku yelled out in the middle of the (packed) Zoo, "You all just lost the Game!" and almost had to run for cover XD It was hilarious!
Also, you get to see all sorts of talents, from traditional pen-and-ink art to sculptures of cats made of clarinet parts
--What makes it most fun for you?--
Getting to see friends I might otherwise never see the rest of the year, and getting to make NEW friends too (I recently refound one of these friends on SL
We have fun chattin
)
--What are your favorite events or displays?--
I love, love, LOVED Uncle Kage's Story Hour and 2 Gryphon's sets. I even got to go to the improv session with 2, Jibba, Kage, and Alexander Adams--it was hysterical! Ask about the Kage handkerchief story sometime
Besides that, I loved the fursuit parade--there were over 300 awesome suits in that parade--it was amazing
--Or even, what do you love about the furry community that keeps you drawn to it?--
The openness and friendliness of it's members. You can be a normal everyday red fox or you can be a rabid, mental-ward escapee bat who runs around in a torn up straight jacket, and you'll be accepted either way!
I love the talent of it's artists--holy CRAP we have amazing artists and talents in this fandom!

AC08 was my first year at a con and i had a blast. Words cannot describe it's complexity and it's multifaceted culture of this con. It is so well organized that it rarely makes others feel excluded no matter your lifestyle, beliefs or ethinicity.
Welp, i shouldn't have to say more and let the # of attendees show the reason for this con.
I definately can't wait for AC09 to commence.
The secret is in you.....

The reasons that any one person may go to Anthrocon may be different from someone else's reason.
I think that AC's dealer room is the largest in the fandom. So you get to see one of the largest possible assortments of anthro-oriented material and art live and in person. I also love AC's art show. There are some truly magnificent pieces of art that make their way into the art show. (And one of my favorite artists only submits art to a small number of conventions...so I'm always looking for it at AC.)
I also really love seeing the variety of fursuits that appear at Anthrocon. Being a fursuiter myself, it's always a joy to not only see wonderful creations that returning to Anthrocon, but to see what new and exciting costumes that people will be wearing.
I love the social aspect of Anthrocon. It really is a place where furries from around the world get to meet and talk with one another. Some people get intimidated by the size of the event, but that's part of what makes it so grand. As large as it is, you can still get to be social and make new friends that you might never have thought you could meet before.
I think the most alluring part of Anthrocon is it's overall spirit. When we first made the move to Pittsburgh, someone told me it felt like Anthrocon was a little furry city. And it dawned on me that they were right. The local establishments seem to really love us. Some have specials on the menus just for our attendees, and have even gone the extra step of making commemorative t-shirts for us. Waiters and waitresses that see someone's badge and call you by your furry nickname..just as if they were old friends. Fernando's and Steel City Diner are forever a part of Anthrocon history. Watching fursuiters have a drink at Tonic has become a tradition. I don't think I've had a year in Pittsburgh without going to Sonoma Grill. Really, there is just a unique vibe that AC has that simply spills into the surrounding neighborhood. Many locals have embraced our convention, and have become as much a part of us...as we have have grown into thinking of Pittsburgh as AC's home.

I hate being the ass again but:
Please, please, please - none of us want to know or care about your sex life and it drags everyone down when you mention it at an inappropriate time. Despite any impressions you get otherwise, your sexual interests are a private matter that you don't discuss any more loudly amongst strangers than you would at a family dinner party or at work.
I know that I'm policing when I shouldn't be (I'm not staff) and I know that it's really not my place to tell people what to do but children browse these boards, as do the parents of children who are curious what their kids are getting in to and news outlets curious for a story about the weird folks in suits at the con. It would be nice if we could keep it family friendly and focus on positive, wholesome things. You know.
That said, the con is a very fun time because of the folks there - both people you know from online and people you meet there. There's good programming, and Pittsburgh essentially becomes furrytown USA for a while which is ultra neat.

I think the original poster were merely talking about the art they collect.
But I do agree with the spirit of your comment, which is that there are certain topics that one does not discuss in polite company.
More importantly, this is also an all-ages website. It is always a good idea to operate from the assumption that the 12-year old kid of the local constable/priest/rabbi/civic leader may be reading these forums.
I'm just sayin'.
