The convention needs you to register under your legal name for, obviously, legal reasons, but your badge can be your real name.. or your fursonia name.. or even editorial comment.
But be aware the convention reserves the right to reject badge names if they violate convention rules.

You have it right. Your Badge Name will be what is printed on the front of your badge; it may be your real name, or a nickname; it can be a name of your character/fursona, or as Giza mentioned it may even be blank.
Here's an example of some typical badge names: "Uncle Kage", "Chiaroscuro", "Giza", "Tigerwolf", "Rigel", "Xydexx Squeakypony", "PeterCat", "K.P.", "Wyldekitten", "Simba Lion".
Names aren't really "taken." You can choose any badge name you want. We have some that show up repeatedly. I think we have three or four "Silverfoxes" and nine or ten "Graywolfs".
- A color (red, blue, etc.)
- A celestial body (sun, moon, sky, etc.)
- A species (lion, rat, wombat, etc.)
- A body part (paws, tail, etc.)
- A basic substance occurring in nature (rain, fire, water, etc.)
One year we got a registration for "Sunfire Goldlion", which pretty much put an end to the evening's work.
As was said, badge names are not reserved, and have been duplicated in the past without trouble. If you are curious to know if your badge name has been used by someone else, after you register send a note to , and we can check to see if the name is duplicated.

Blank badge names are also acceptable.

I think i remember hearing rumors of a drinking game based on registration--one for every mention of a color or type of animal in a badge name...
