New To Forum. Young Anthro.

Graphite's picture

Hello all. I am new to this forum, and somewhat new to Anthro. I will start out. My name is Jeremy, but my anthro character is named Graphite. I am 14 years old. I have never attended a con, and don't own a suit. But hope to someday. I dont tell anybody I know about anthro, I guess I am too nervous. Both of my parents are really conservative, so I dont think I should tell them, at least until I am older. I have finally decided to share it with somebody else, so might as well be the wide world of the Internet.

Here is some stuff about my character. I based him heavily off me (of course):
Graphite is a all black Grey Wolf, with a white stripe on the left side of his face.
Blue Eyes
Anthro Stance
Well Built
Wears Jeans, Black and Grey Trucker Hat, Brown Cowboy Boots, and Cummins Belt Buckle
Intrests are same as mine

Graphite has never been drawn before, so maybe a amazing artist on here would do me a favor?

I would describe myself as a Redneck. I live on a farm, and spend a lot of time wrenching on cars, tractors, and diesel trucks. I am obssessed, yes obssessed, with MoPar (Chrysler, Dodge, Sometimes AMC, and Plymouth) muscle cars. I dream of building a Daytona clone someday.
My other intrest's include: 70's Rock (AC/DC), Pool, Poker, Computers, Swimming, My Computer, Hunting, Fishing, and Working With Electricity.

Just wanted to introduce myself, and see if their are other people out there. Oh, and opinions on my character?

I am new to the anthro scene as well, I am a bit confused, why would you not like to tell your parents because they are conservative? Its not like coming out of the closet or anything, its just a subculture, well i suppose it all depends on how much your into it...

Anywho, your character sounds pretty good man Smiling

Welcome aboard m8.

What I meant to say, is that they are really close-minded. They would think it is weird. I hate saying that, but they think it is weird that Wolves as a favorite animal.

Yes, the car is rusty.
No, it doesnt run.
Why did I buy it? It had a nice set of tires.

WOLVES ROCK M8!!!!

I used to work with them at a local zoo (as well as coyotes and foxes)

For me its been a gradual thing. I came about the fandom by slowly immersing myself in books by Jack London (at an early age) Brian Jacques and Clement-Davies, I've always had a sort of attraction to stuff like that. i knew all about the anthropromorphic world but only recently did i even know there was a subculture.

My 2 cents is just enjoy it and don't give the haters ammo by enforcing stereotypes and your all set.

I was in a family like that myself--so I understand what you're saying about not wanting to tell your parents. Mine found out on their own (I think by googling some of the search terms they'd seen in the history), so they automatically got the worst possible impression of it all...

I'll tell you most artists around here are skittish about doing free art (a lot of people try to take advantage of their generosity), but there are some amazing and quite affordable artists out there. Start by looking around FurAffinity. I highly recommend people like:
Baka Sukonku (who I know personally--great guy Smiling Be careful though--a good amount of his pics are NSFW http://www.furaffinity.net/user/bakasukonku)

James Darkwolf (http://www.furaffinity.net/user/thedarkwolf Kind of a semi-anime-ish style, but he has done a couple pictures of my fox-girl that I adore)

Larathen: (http://www.furaffinity.net/user/larathen/ Pretty good drawings--I rather like his style)

Yuchi Hyena: (http://www.furaffinity.net/user/info/yuchidayena/ Kinda a more cartoony style, but really well-done Smiling )

So there ya go--a few places to start Smiling

I like your character Laughing out loud Nice to see something OTHER than an emo/goth kid Laughing out loud I myself am a hippy-dippy bat with a penchant for hemp jewelry and awesome 70's music (Pink Floyd RULES man Laughing out loud).

So I guess what I'm trying to say is: Welcome to the fandom! Watch out for random Drama-Llama Explosions and the gratuitous spooge the fandom sometimes produces, and you'll be set! Hope to see you pop up around the site, and if you want to see my FA page it can be found here: http://www.furaffinity.net/user/eccentricfurry/

I'd like to welcome you to the Anthrocon forums. Being a fan of anthropomorphics isn't as common as something as say Star Wars/Star Trek, but it can be a lot of fun.

Having a fursuit isn't necessary for being a fan. Many do have them, but definitely not all. (In fact only about 15% of last year's attendance had fursuits.)

Your character description sounds fine. I think you'll find that there are a lot of furries that have interests in automobiles, poker, and many of your other interests. (I myself would someday like to get a 1957 Dodge Coronet as a weekend car.)

Contacting others here on the forums is a good way to make friends. Check out the link that Kage sent. It's a good piece of information for some of our younger friends and furry fans.

Above all, welcome! I hope you find the fandom as enriching an experience as I have.

Its good to see furs finding the fandom at younger ages. It used to be so spread and scattered that it was hard to find. I only realized it existed at about 16 (just over 4 years ago) and didn't get the courage to "make contact" with any aspect of it for another year after that.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

I'm impressed with your ability to type in readable English, first of all. Kudos from me there.

Secondly, we have furs of all ages. Heck, we had a rather young fur (or feather I should say) who had an eagle costume. Quite amazing. As KP had stated, fursuits are not nor will they ever be necessary to attend a convention.

My mother comes from a Mopar family, of which I am familiar (Don't forget Jeep and Eagle!)

It is a pleasure to meet you. Welcome to the forums!

Hmm.. well with the parent thing.. I just never mentioned it.. If my parent was to ask about it, I would tell her straight up. Though I would be sure to tell her what it is to 'me'. And.. not let the trolls trying to bash us 'explain' whta fur's are about.
Luckly for me, Im of legal age in two days, and sence I first realised that I was a furry, I've been lucky enough to suround myself with them. ( a good large number of my friends are Furs )
And due to my legal age, I am now pushing myself to leave the Den of my parent, and move on a bit. This being particularly hard for me.. because I am very depentant on people. Luckly, Im going to be moving into a friend of mines place of residence. A Kitsune and a Neko. Ironicly enough, those are their names. xD

To tell the truth, I actually enjoyed showing everyone in my animation class that I am a member of the fandom. My parents had to learn that i am a fan before i could even think about going to AC seeing as how I'm only 17 years old.
Now that I got that out of the way on my birthday (I probably could have timed it better, but my mom saw my computer's background and I had to explain it to them) and they didn't really freak out, it has caused weird looks throughout the week, but they don't really seem to care, but we get to my being 17 years old and you talking about possibly telling them when you get older. Just try to do it on a really good day, in case they do freak out because they have the wrong ideas about the fandom...
Now the only problem left to conquer is that I live in Texas, I owe my parents $500 and i want to attend AC in 2009 and i really am afraid to tell my employer why i want at least 15 hours a week because he doesn't have to deal with me.

In some states, minors need a Work Permit, obtained from High School, to be allowed to work beyond a certain number of hours each day or each week; I don't know if this applies in Texas, but you may want to check on it, if you want more hours.

As to why you would want 15 or more hours of work, well, as you mentioned, you owe your parents $500, for one thing, or maybe simply wish to improve your Standard of Living - but none of that should be of any concern to your employer; and a manager who has given the impression that he doesn't have to deal with his employees, or has no real interest in their lives save that the Gears of Capitalism are greased with the blood of The Workers, probably has a high turnover rate among those employees, and may not be worth working for in the long run.

As to the problem of Living in Texas - well, I am afraid that I can not help you there; but other furry fans (and furry artists, furry writers, and furry comic book publishers) also live there. Personally, I think its because of the Blue Bonnets in spring.

Feltheridan's picture

when i stated that i live in Texas, I just meant that is is a 1,200 mile trip and will require significant funding (by significant, i mean about $700 on top of that $500 debt, which is a lot to scratch together in 250 days while working part-time).
And when i said my manager doesn't have to deal with me, i just meant that he might cut my hours, because my coworkers might find such things a bit creepy which may lead to a less cohesive workplace.
and I don't think we require a work permit in Texas. my friend works 23 or so without one.

Creepy? You don't have to tell them, or you could always say the extra time is for something else entirely.

good point, and any further pursuit of my workplace does not belong here. I just wanted to give my own point of view about going public to him and tell him that there were others with troubles as well and that I found it easiest to take the bullet in class (I suppose that there is a difference between an animation class and a Social Studies or Math class though, I still haven't told my classmates in my U.S. history and Algebra classes).
I also wanted to inform him that there are some people that can be convinced that the fandom is not as... troubled as the general public seems to think.
I did not mean to steal the topic, sorry.
Just some quick advice, don't use a furry pic as your background, it is too easy to notice.
And I'm being absolutely serious here. I like the design of your fursona Graphite, my characters are usually everything that I am not....

By "him" I presume you mean Graphite? The originator of the thread? Ahh!

Quote:
...and tell him that there were others with troubles as well...

Having reread your posts, I see that I have somehow misunderstood what you were saying. The advice which you offer is good - and if it seems we were intruding too far into your worklife, then I apologise; as you say, it really has no bearing on the main course of this thread.

But I am not sure that I understand this feeling of need to "Go Public" to announce to people that one is a "furry fan". There should be no more shame in it than there is in stamp collecting, nor any great reason for taking undue pride in it either, as though it were an accomplishment of some sort.

I do not aim this as a criticism of either you or Graphite, you are each in the best position to judge what you wish to share with your family and friends; but it might make for an interesting thread all its own, dealing with "fans and enthusiasts" and how certain social stigma accrue to specific subjects of that enthusiasm.

BTW, it is good to hear that some schools offer courses in Animation (is this an "appreciation" or "history of" course? Or a hands-on, make-it-yourself class?). When I was in High School, it was regarded as less of a fine art and more of a trade, and one had to do a lot of digging in school and public libraries to learn anything about the subject, and the career center/career councellor usually had outdated materials with scant (and mildly discouraging) information and guidance on how to become a professional animator, which at that time meant working for Hanna-Barbera or Walt Disney Productions...if you wanted to eat regular.

Feltheridan's picture
Location: Flower Mound Texas

It is about 99% hands-on experience with lightwave 3D (we have a 2D animation class as well, but i decided to pursue 3D), but we also learn a little about history here and there. that history is usually why we use certain methods rather than some useless information anyways.
and I suppose you have a good point about who has the best information as to whether or not to tell their parents about the fandom.
And pursuit of my professional life is okay, unless you walk into the Papa Johns i work at and say "Heya Feltheridan! Fellow furry fan!", but this belongs to Graphite, not me.

sorry i left this part out, I did not exactly shout it out to the world when I "told" my classmates in animation.
The characters in my animation were anthropomorphic foxes and when I was asked by a couple of people why I chose that direction for the design, I just didn't feel like covering it up. I told them that I found such artwork interesting and that I liked foxes.
thankfully, only one person drew an immediate line to yiffing and it took a lot of self control not to deck him then... (in my opinion, there is nothing wrong with such art, I just don't like when someone stereotypes me.)

I'm doing two arty things recently one is my GCSE's (I think they're called SATs in America) I'm doing the project on buildings but I am trying to include as much furry and anime related stuff by being as audacious as I can be without arousing too many questions;
and the other I've just started -I was asked to participate in an animation display thingy which is going up in a gallery about families -modern families and tudor ones. I'm going to ask if i could portray the online families as well XD!
and yet I haven't posted a single piece of artwork online lol
