Fursuits.
Thank All 453 of ya! We were exactly 100 more than last year! Parade route had some glitches, but we have laready planned and walked out next year's path. I will say we intend to get the Radio/route music fixed.. We will utilize more stairwells to get up to the roof quicker.. We will shorten the route by a football field length.. And we will use a semaphore flagging system so all on the deck can see when the photographer is ready and taking the pictures..

So in all, we learned from this year's mistakes, and will do better next year, where I'm sure we will break 553! :>

Also for those that went to the impromptu fursuit / non rave Sat night dance (I like to think there were more than just fursuiters in there since they were not raver's they liked the mixed genre..) Should I attempt to do a fursuit dance next year, doing the same requests/mixed genres, or should I give up trying to DJ? I think of all the requests we took that night we only were unable to fill like 6 of them.. But, we took requests.. I dunno if you are able to do that over in the rave room. I'm sure if we can get official "alternate"/fursuit dance, we can get some effects lighting to go along with the low lights up to be accomodating of suiters.

wow the flag thing was what i was about to suggest! (i was thinking of giant florescent colored posterboard numbers counting down or a gigantic arrow pointing out the photographer! lol

the music... (i sorta had a feel that it was just my place in line having static...though with out the merry-go-round music...it was almost...a little better then last couple of years...mainly cause the merry-go-round music is a little.........demeaning.......) But for next year, having a faster parade route could be cool. it really wasn't that horrible this year either! no one died of heat stroke, or tripped on the escilaterz either Smiling so yeah, AND even cooler, it was packed with people the entire route!

so yeah, keep it rawk'n for next year, deffonatly!

I mentioned it on camera at the closing ceremonies' feedback session, but I'll put it here again - full length mirror in each headless lounge, for costume checks, and a chance to hit character before leaving the room?

Would be awesome, thanks Laughing out loud

*wince* I foresee shattered glass at some point.

If someone can point me to an unbreakable (likely acrylic) mirror that is full-length, free-standing, and costs less than $300, I'll buy it for the Headless Lounge.

EDIT: Other than this one which I have just ordered.

i was going to suggest but now that you have ordered one its great, but in the Theatre we cant use glass due to it wud break we have roll up mirrors which dont break and then when un rolled they stay open made with some type thingy (dont roll up again) they are great and cost around about £20 which i think is about $40

I don't think the quality of the reflected image in those types of mirrors is that great. Good enough for stage use, since the audience isn't near enough to see the flaws in the image, but up close it might look weird.

Something I was curious about:

Last year, I remember you (Yappyfox) leading the parade, cymbals in hand, and then whatshisface (the fox dude with the camera and Pantone-red suit) at the very end, carrying the card with the grand total number of fursuiters. Was that the "traditional" arrangement, or just what happened to come together for AC2007? I was a bit surprised to see neither of those bookends this year.

I can't speak for Camstone, however Yappy did lead the parade. He did not have the cymbal this year as we tried something new, however he did indicate that he felt we need to being it back to alert people that the parade is approaching.

Lots of experiments this year, all trying to make things work better every year.

I do think we were a bit better with the organization and lineup in the main ballroom...we just didn't anticipate having quite so many fursuiters show up this year.

As an interesting aside: this year there were 453 suiters in the parade and 3390 attendees. That means that 13.3% of the total attendance of Anthrocon was a participant in the fursuit parade. Quite a nice accompishment for Anthrocon's fursuit community.

Ah, okay, I double-checked my photos. Yappy's there, all right.

Anyway, the cymbals are a nice touch. I suppose if variety is desired, you could give him a tambourine, or perhaps a full-size marching drum... ^_^

The thing with Camstone was, at least in 2007, he carried a sign at the end of the parade stating the total number of suiters. The sign was (obviously) hastily made, suggesting that it was drawn up while the parade was still assembling in the Ballroom. This, I thought, was a swell idea---it gives everyone a great final photo, and of course, you learn the potentially record-breaking number sooner.

(Maybe in future years, the sign can be made using large, stick-on numbers, to make it more presentable and legible.)

camstone's picture

*waves* You are correct, it was totally improptu in 2006 and 2007, and it was done again this year after the parade was over. (Had to find paper and a pen!) I've kinda taken up the end of the parade so the Dorsai know the end of the line (more or less) and that we make sure that those who can't get up or down the stairs know where the end of the other line is. I use the Dorsai as our "count" as it's the best we have, and they seem to enjoy doing it! (We've had other counters, but we're always within a couple fursuits.)

As for the record... well... seems there just isn't any interest in setting one. Lots are interested each year how many fursuits there are, but truth be told - there are always some coming up to me afterwards saying "Add two more, as we weren't in the parade!" or "We missed the start!" Well, the whole point was to count how many were in the parade at the point across the bridge above the dealer's room and again where it's going through the dealer's room... and we take the higher of the two - because it's almost impossible to count every fursuit at the con!

So, if what I do and seems to have some value to some of you... so as long as I am allowed, I'll likely try to carry some sort of sign at the end of the parade with some form of a count. "Unofficially."

iSKUNK's picture
Location: Cambridge, MA

I, and no doubt many others, have appreciated the gesture. Even if it's not the "official" number, it's pretty close, and seeing it after all the suiters have walked past is the proverbial cherry on top. (And it beats the heck out of keeping count ourselves! Sticking out tongue)

I think you make a great bookend counterpart to Yappy. Start the Parade with a red fox, end it with a red fox ^_^ I'd be happy for you to fill that role on an ongoing basis.

OH, one more thing - during the parade set up, a LOT of the confusion that we were all having is that in the crowd, we couldn't see who was talking, and we couldn't HEAR where it was coming from, because the PA system was broadcasting from the stage. Next year, how about getting a pawpet-on-a-stick, that can be seen well above the crowd (at least in the immediate area), and having it do the announcing? Laughing out loud

Recherei's picture

Also you kept telling everyone in line number 1, (2, 3, etc.) to go "over there". No one knew what number line they were in nor did we have any idea what direction you meant by "there". (For future reference the directions are: Towards the stage, away from the stage, towards the hotel side and towards the river side of the ballroom)

thanx

Yappy, maybe it's just me, but we needed a lot more non-costumers to pass out water. I was literally booking it trying to get water to as many furs as I could... dropped one bottle.

It came to my attention that there were some costumers who felt really sick, and that is when water is needed the most.

Thanks to Uncle Kagé for ordering as many bottles as he did this year. It was *very* helpful. Next year, I will be joining the parade myself.

Tony Ringtail and I eventually transported some water to the balcony for everyone. We both knew just how hot it gets inside those costumes.

Thanks to those of whom helped!

YAAAAAAAAY!!!

This should go in a new thread, so that it can be bumped to the front page!

Great shot! I can see that some kind of "Say cheese!" cue is needed, however... many of the suiters aren't looking at the camera / being cute / doing what they would do if they knew they were being captured for posterity :-]

Anyway, thank you, Techwolf, for this fine piece of work!

The only dances I attended were Saturday's and the Dead Dog, both of which I enjoyed immensely. I think the standard techno is great, and is endlessly fun to dance to. But Baby Got Back and Love Shack were a nice change of pace, and I can't imagine I was the only one with a smile plastered on their face when those songs came up. I'm not sure if it was you DJ'ing at the time, but it was nice.

I guess what I'm saying is the variety is nice, but keeping dance and various types of electronic music as the majority of a playlist seems to be mandatory. But variety isn't bad, especially if there needs to be a cool-down period for some of the crazier dancers.

Probably. Seeing as how the majority of the people who go to AC, also go to FC. Its the same suiters. Its not like the western convention has its own group of attendees and the eastern ones have theirs. I know a few don't attend both, but the majority do.

hopefully I'll have my suit for next year and can participate in the fursuit parade...

On the dance, I hope they continue to offer a variety. I personally thought that was a great thing and I think you'd have had more of an attendance had people have known about it more in advance. I had stopped in for quite a while and enjoyed it personally as I'm not much of a raver fan. So I say don't give up trying to DJ and hope to see ya'll there again.

I don't care what anyone says, but I had a great time overall. I was very glad to be in the parade and this being my first con, it was awesome. I'll definatly be there next year. We have to break 500 in the parade and I believe we will.

Speaking of the water issue. I know that very few of us fursuit handlers were going along the parade route with our 'suiters' but the ones of us that did were loaded down with water bottles and were giving sips at every opertunity. I know there were at least 2-3 other than just myself. Once we got to the balcony outside they were gone through even quicker.

I know a few folks got irritated at me for heading along side, but the 6 suiters I was supplying water to were eternaly grateful for the water at the 'bottleneck' areas where things slowed to a stop occasionaly.

That said I'm sure it was some kind of "faux pas" to be doing that, but honestly the only other opertunity would have been to run to the far end at the baclony and wait there. Point is, any though been given to a mid route 1 minute stop for water? Mostly I think it was due to the heat.

I had my waterbottle in my pouch, and shared it with bradhound who needed it after the climb up the stairs.. those stairs were brutal in my costume, I shoulda stayed downstairs.. but might not have gotten the nice breezes down there.. oh well for next time.

anyway, thanks for the good con this year.

We'll always be looking to improve things the following year.

And I don't see a problem with having specific folks around to help by offering water or assistance to parade participants who may need it.

The Society for Creative Anachronism has a fine longstanding tradition of waterbearers to support its participants. Perhaps there's some good ideas to be found there?

This was my first time in the parade and I had a good time marching along as the Death of Rats. It was the only time I got to show off his scythe.

I'm hopping to have a new suit for next year thanks for all the fun
