but I thought it could be a good idea to start a post about places

you might wanna check out in the city.

but also the con-goers MIGHT want to avoid , either because they would

waste their time , or because it is actually unsafe.

----------------------

My two listings:

PROS :
-Go across the river from the Convention center , there are shops , entertainment and
there is also this old-style funicular that gives you a magnificient view of Pittsburgh.

-CONS:
The Mcdonald's in front of the subway station ..
It might have been that we were very unlucky .. but while we were there , there has been a fight between a hobbo and some random lady , a junkie passing out and other weird stuff..

BAD

The McDonald's closest to the Omni was terrible. We only ate there because it was the nearest available thing still open at the hour we got in Thursday.

How does it take you five minutes to screw up a 2 item order? There were a couple other folks standing around too and I think they screw up every single person's order.

Amazingly awful.

GOOD

Fernando's sub shop was excellent. They were jam packed when we went with perhaps twenty people in line, but got everybody through within a two minutes window. Amazingly efficient. Good food. Highly recommended.

The Italian restaurant in the theatre district was very nice if you want a fancier meal. (I'm blanking on name) Reasonably priced for a fancier sit down dinner. The night we were there, we were apparently first congoers they had seen, so were very interested in what was going on. Service was very fast. Wait time was maybe 10 minutes between time we ordered and got food. Might be longer for something more complicated than pasta, but not a whole lot. One warning, tables are very small and the space it tight! Cozy, but not a lot of spare space. Leave bags and prints in the hotel room. There's not really any space to put gear down.

Sushi Kim's was also excellent. The walk is a little daunting since there's a gap between it and anything else on that street and you start wondering if you missed it. I have no idea what we ate. We pointed at pictures to order since we'd never had Korean food. If you order off the Korean menu (rather than the sushi) and have a party of two or more, dinner comes with about four little pots of strange sidedishes. Very affordable, very pleasant.

Sushi Kim's was excellent! We had a large group of about 10 or so, we all ordered a bit of everything and the Sushi was very affordable.

Highly recommend!

The Italian place you're probably referring to is Buca di Beppo, part of a chain.
I have gone to BdB in association with the Con every year since 2001! You really
need to go as a group--the prices seem hefty but the thing is your table (let's
say 6, or 7 etc.) will order a few dishes which you split. You eat family style
and when all's said and done it'll prob be $18-20 per person

It's a bit of a walk (15-20 min.) but that's good for working up an appetite.
By the way there's a subway/rapid transit station nearby and you can take it into downtown
(do that on the way back if you want)
and it drops you off on Wood St., near the hotel. I went on one of the inclines
(opposite Station Sq., where Buca is) and found that my fare gave me a transfer
which was good for the subway.

Yeah, I had fun the one time I was involved in this (2006), but I haven't gone again since because I couldn't stand the taste of the food. Yes, apparently it was just me, but the tomato sauce in the lasagna and pasta tasted like pure stainless steel. Perhaps they have a better cook now though.

No, the one I recommended here was NOT Bucca di Beppo. I don't have last years book handy but it was not a family style Italian restaurant. I remember it being in the theatre district, but couldn't tell you which one it was without seeing an actual list of the restaurants.

Subway is one of my favourite places to eat at Anthrocon. There were two that I had spotted on Liberty Avenue (I think that's the street), both within just blocks of each other. If you're a health nut... well, let's face it, it's going to be exponentially better than Mickey D's... you might as well go to Subway.

There's a variety of nutritious options for your sub sandwich. I like turkey and bacon with shredded cheese, onions, tomato, lettuce and spinach with a splash of mayo. A footlong is good enough to keep me going throughout the day. 6" for lunch, and a 6" for dinner. Doesn't hurt to throw in a cookie or a bag of chips, but the sandwich is the big thing. Get a Powerade or bottled water with your lunch instead of cola. You'll feel a lot better and much more alert with healthier food in your system.

Well one thing about the McDonald's, which I guess is near the Omni, I'm surprised that they don't serve Big Macs after a certain time.

A lot of McDonalds are like that, I've noticed, and it really ticks me off because the Big Mac is pretty much the only thing I like on their menu. I understand the logic behind doing the late-night menu (less food to keep prepped during the downtime), but I don't think it's a good idea to run the place that way. If they have enough business to justify staying open 24 hours, they should have a full menu during that time. If they don't have enough business to justify staying open that late, they should close like everyone else does. And if they really must do the half-menu thing, they should at least find a way to offer the Big Mac, because I have a very hard time believing that their signature sandwich sells fewer units than the same crap everyone else has (ie, the quarter-pounder, which is effectively the same as every other burger restaurant's basic burger).

I hate McDonald's to begin with. The only fast food Ill eat is Wendy's or Burger King, but even then, I tend to stray away from that type of food, even if i have to pay double at a restaurant. I also can imagine that if one is planning to fursuit, that all that junk food isn't good and can cause some energy problems.

Interestingly, since they've always been under so much fire, McDonald's food is relatively healthy when compared to the likes of Applebees, Friendley's, TGI Friday's, any steakhouse, or similar restaurants. The nutritional content of those meals falls under very little scrutiny... ever, so it's a lot of pretty bad stuff for you.

At least they offer somewhat more healthier choices, even though McDonald's and such do offer salads. And they do look more appetizing too. If I'm gonna pig out and eat a ton of calories, id rather have something then a plain cheeseburger. You just have to watch out what you eat.

I saw it last year but didn't go.

I plan on riding the Duquesne Incline this year. It's an old cable car from the 1880's I believe.

Well, I know there are some nice places to walk around, lovely views.
As for food, McD's was barely digestable. I would stay away from any place attached to the hotels, unless you like paying that much for three bites. I would deffinetly suggest Fernando's, great food, discount to furries. As well, more then sure All Fur Radio will be there pumping music and maybe giving away gift cards for that place as well. But I will be inhaling food from there. so see you there.

That's easy, when I went to college in pitt, our first day they took us up to the top of the building and pointed off "Look in that direction, see every thing across the river on that side of town? Don't go there." Then they turned to the other direction "See every thing on that side across that river? Don't go there alone." Which made it fun because I lived in the middle of the area they told us never to go in.

Find some one know knows pitt and they'll show you alot of fun stuff. The con gives us a map with hot spots usually. If you want some thing, head up the road into the dock area and there's lots of shops and stuff. Used to be the black market was there too when I went to college some years ago but its not that any more... no fun. Not sure what else you'd call a abandoned looking warehouse with tables inside covered in watches and radios with no price tags.

But wait, we're driving all that way and spending all that money to go to a furry con right? Why are you leaving the hotel? Smiling

Sheesh ! They talked about Pittsburgh like it was the Bronx or something..

And what you say is funny because when people go to Montreal , they are told not to go to RDP or Montreal north because it's DANGEROUS!!!

I live right in that part of town XD

I would recommend Primanti brothers ! They have 2 locations close to the convention center. On that is open 24 hours in the strip district not far from the convention center to the northeast.
and another by market square down by the point state park that is open late like 11pm or so. www.primantibrothers.com

theres also an Italian place thats very good http://www.montecellos.com/pittsburgh.html I have eaten many times at the Sewickley location up the river to the northwest of the downtown.

I wanted to chime in and also mention to avoid that McDonald's. I was down in Pittsburgh several months ago to see a show at the Benedum Center and while we were eating, there seemed to be a lot of traffic in and out of the men's room.
It was very suspicious and none of them ordered food. (This was roughly around 4pm also, mind you, so I assume the activity was probably worse later in the night.)

Two males also got into an argument in front of the place and continued it inside.

Add on to that, the floors and tables were filthy.

Places I will definitely recommend going to:

Steel City Diner* (very affordable and the food is yumtastic) I even spilled my drink all over the table and my friends and the waitress didn't tear my head off. Laughing out loud She did threaten to give me a sippy cup though.... Sticking out tongue

The sub shop less than a block away from the Westin on the same street as the SCD*. (Delicious subs and they had a special deal going on last year.)

"there seemed to be a lot of traffic in and out of the men's room.

Two possibilities of what was happening in there..

Both equally disturbing..

Both I won't talk about.
