ok, last year I remember seeing that someone had blessed the rest of us with a portable DVD player, which we spent a few hours watching until the battery ran out. I was curious if there was any way an electric outlet or two could be available in the hotel lobby while people are waiting for their rooms to become available. Restrictions on extension cords would be a feasable option to keep people from tripping over cords as well as keeping the lobby looking neat and tidy. Im sure furs would be willing to share one outlet and if we cant, I could easily bring a power strip and allow one plug per person. The reason I suggest this is because there are few options to occupy oneself at 7-8AM, which is when many furs had to arrive(not to mention some of us had to arrive even earlier than that). If thats not feasable, maybe set aside an area on either the second or third floor where a TV and a movie could be set up or something. Id be willing to bring my own little portable player to entertain myself with and share it with anyone who could squeeze in to watch.

I suggest entertainment sources like this because if I try to read a book that early in the morning, ill likely fall asleep and Im pretty sure I can recall sleeping in any place other than one's own room is strictly forbidden(aside from your car, which is not forbbidden, but generally not suggestable either as its not entirely safe.

if any of this sounds at all feasable, feel free to reply with how you think it could be done. or if you would like to discuss it further in private, I can be reached via email at elrynn_naumova(at)yahoo.com

thanks,
CJ

I say that it sounds like a smashing idea!

This is a good idea - but if hotel space is taken up for this, I suspect that the hotel will try to figure out a way to charge AnthroCon for it. Since the front lobby of this hotel isn't particularly expansive, it might be in their best interests to direct waiting furfen to an upper level room with light refreshment and a TV set up, either to play a DVD of a movie or watch local broadcast programming - but again, expect them to charge something for that.

As an alternative - how about going on an exploratory walk around downtown Pittsburgh? Once you have checked in - and been informed that a room will not be available until after noon - leave your luggage with the bell staff. The man at the bellhop/porter desk will store your bag in a locked room until you are ready to claim it later; it is customary to tip the gentleman for this - a buck a bag will usually suffice - but it frees you up to walk about unemcumbered, and play tourist for a bit.

After all, the convention itself pretty much spends Thursday setting up; nothing noteworthy happens until the Opening Ceremonies, a reception, and then a welcome dance that evening. Unless you have art to hang in the artshow (which can't be done until the panels are set up - hey, you can volunteer to help with that!); and if you pre-registered for AnthroCon, paying in advance for your badge, it will be waiting for you, you _don't_ have to spend Thursday waiting in line for that, it can be picked up any time registration is open. There isn't really anything to miss, if you play tourist for a while.

I did this just this year - walking down Liberty Avenue, I scoped out all the eateries, and made it almost all the way down to the park at Fort Pitt; I got sidetracked to the Three Rivers Folk Arts Festival, and walked back up Penn Avenue, saw the theater district, including Heinz Hall (Home of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra), several elegant stores selling all sorts of things, from the practical to high-end objets d'art, including beautiful crystal sculpture (Steuben Crystal).

Pittsburgh is full of neat things for tourists to see and do; while there, take advantage of the free time available, and see and do some of them. Check out the various chamber of commerce and visitors' resource websites for ideas.

Don't know what see? The Concierge Desk ususally has brochures and magazines devoted to pointing out all the entertainment and shopping opportunities, and all the sites (and Sights!) worth seeing, with hours of operation and costs of admission, if any. And then the Concierge him/herself can give advice, as a local. That is what a Concierge is for!

Concierges are as close to magical beings as most of us will ever find! They have resources that us mere mortals can't begin to approach - friends in both High _and_ Low Places, favors to call - and _some_ Concierges love the challenge of obtaining the unobtainable; the thrill of the chase, and all that...

If you want to go to a ballgame, for example, or see a play or musical, or get tickets to a concert, the Concierge can probably provide them...at a cost. The harder to find a ticket becomes, the higher the premium - but it doesn't hurt to ask. And if... - no, make that when the Concierge comes through, a gratuity commensurate with the difficulty of the task is called for.

Good Concierges are highly-valued staff at premium hotels; when a hotel hires a top-notch concierge, - or lures one away from a competitor - they announce it in the travel rags and industry news outlets. Concierges often bring the business of loyal and grateful guests with them, like a head-chef at a resort restaurant, or a top hairstylist to a salon.

...Goodness, but I got sidetracked! Anyway - yeah, a DVD player with appropriate power would be nice, somewhere other than the desk lobby - but consider using the free time to see the city that is hosting us.

You hit the nail on the head. The hotel isn't just going to give away their electricity or food.

The idea of exploring Pittsburgh is an excellent one, there are plenty of things to do in downtown Pittsburgh. Last year we published a guide of things to do (it was available on the website), and we will do the same thing next year.

yep, I figured as much, but it cant hurt to ask. It might be interesting to find out how much it would cost just in case this idea does go through in some later years.

Also, where might I find the previous year's guide? It might be outdated by a year, but thats plenty up to date for me. Is that the googleEarth file on the travel page?

If thats all said and done, im curious what furs would like to get a precon meet set up early thursday morning.(yes, 7-8 in the morning or so since nothign else will be available.) Bunch of completely random furs meet up before the major con festivities start and go out, get something to eat and hang out for an hour or two just to keep us from sleeping in the lobby Laughing out loud Would be good to socialize a bit. Also would keep me from spending a fortune on the breakfast buffet.

Keep in mind that it's still last year's page that is up there. (note the "2006" in the header of that page)

We'll put a 2007 version of that page up a few months before the con.

From some past experiences at World of Warcraft conventions some of those who are bored with waiting for the rooms to become available deposited their belongings with the hotel, went to the nearest toilet and put on their costume. They then went around the city in full gear and in character mode to the near by shops and malls. what a hoot we had, getting photos taken have kids point at us and people willing to play along.

why dont some furs do this at the 2007 con. it would be a laugh although you may need to bring an easy to read city map with you. photo opportunities for the locals, fun for us and some very confused kids seeing a 7 foot fox walk past them.

what do you guys think, remember it turned out great for us at the 2005 wow con.
