Interesting idea, I don't think this has been done at AC recently, if ever. I love a good LAN party, but I also have a hard enough time doing everything I want without throwing gaming into the mix. Hauling my desktop system to Pittsburgh would be pretty cumbersome as well.
I might drop by with a laptop for some UT or Starcraft, though, if you get this thing going

I'd love to attend! By the time AC rolls around, I should have my 4TB media server up and running, which I'll be looking to fill with (PERFECTLY LEGAL) data!

No, no illegal data at all. My drive array will be filled with legal things, like, um... copies of videos from archive.org and music from OCRemix. Yeah. Shhh.

The point he's getting at, which was apparently too subtle, is that openly discussing software piracy on a public forum (a fairly high-traffic one at that) is a good way to attract unwanted attention to those activities. Thus, like anything illegal, it's a good idea to show discresion when discussing it.

Precisely. I work in the software development industry, after all, I would never pirate anything! Hmph!

Having tried UT3 at a non-internet LAN party, I recommend avoiding it. It's highly dependant on an internet connection, which won't be present at something like this, so anyone who doesn't already have it installed won't even be able to change their player name.
UT 2004 is essentially the same game, runs on more computers, and doesn't require an internet connection for full gameplay.

I think Mr. Data Pirate took some wind out of the sails.
However, I'm bringing my laptop and a selection of my games, so I'm up for an impromptu gathering. BTW, I also have a program that allows you to setup networks over the Internet for creating VPNs, its free, and it allows you to limit access to whatever level you prefer. Its free, legal, and fast to setup, plus it won't create a drag on your system, so it won't impede gaming. I can provide more details when I get home.

I'll have a laptop, but whether or not it's capable of gaming or anything depends on my next job. My current laptop is very basic, but if I can afford it, I'll be getting a nice new one before AC

permalinkno worries, honestly. If we are only going to be playing Starcraft and Warcraft 3 then a basic setup is fine. Some Valve games like TF2 however would benefit from a beefy video card.

Depending on how 'portable' my new PC is, I'll have at least my Laptop with me. It's a very nice setup, capable of gaming most high-end things. I'd love to see Starcraft II by AC, but that won't happen. Just let me know what you want me to bring, cause I probably have it. The X-Craft games have the ability to spawn versions (no-key variants you can't use online) so I can install some spawns on your systems if you don't have a copy. Very useful for playing over a LAN with only as handful of CDs.

permalinkwell, it's been a while since I posted here! I guess it would make everyone feel better knowing a time and place when this shindig will take place. How does in The Zoo at 12PM on Thursday? I may change the time to fit the Anthrocon schedule a bit better but for now it's 12 noon. I'll be ordering pizza and soda for everyone! ^ ^

This may be a silly question,
will you LAN system work with a Mac Powerbook? (leopard OS (OSX 10.5))

The network will work, that's always a standard thing (which is the whole point of networking). Games are another issue entirely, and there are relatively few games that run on MacOS. You'll probably have to research that yourself.

Anything Blizzard will work X-platform. They make sure of that. However, I can't vouch for any other games. So what I'm bringing will be able to install on both the Macs and th PCs.

Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory is probably the mont bangin'-est LAN game ever. Works on every OS, FREE, small, and Slammin'-fun. And once you're drunk enough, Armagetron is your next best bid.

I've decided to make the LAN party Friday. I'll bet Saturday everyone will be busy with other things more important than computer games ^ ^p
Once the AC schedule is released we'll all determine the best time to have this.

Sure. And I'll need to know what games you want me to bring.
- Login or register to post comments
permalinkI'll be bringing Starcraft BroodWar, Warraft 3 Frozen Throne, all the Valve Games(ie Halflife and Halflife 2 Deathmatch, TF2, etc..)Gears of War PC, and Unreal Tournament 3. If you have any other games you want to play but no one else has you may think about sharing the games with others. We're just doing a closed LAN so sharing is caring lol. I have an image of all my games saved to hard disk, plus patches for upgrading and Daemon Tools for installing. ^ ^

I have my library in a nice case. I'll just bring it. I have a few games that can be played LAN-style that are fun, and if someone wants to play them, we can go from there. Hmm, I might need to make some room on my laptop for other installs. Damn... I wasn't thinking I needed to get a second HDD before AC... *sigh*

Serviceable. We'll just need a room number now. You can post it here and we'll check the page on Friday to get it. A bit more private than sticking up fliers, I should think.
