I dont know if the DJs made up their song lists yet, but ive got a few requests, and im sure others to as well. Ill post mine and anyone else can post theres, if any DJs want to take a peek and see if they like what we suggest, hopefully we will hear some of our favorite good tunes there. - Paul Van Dyke- "New York City" (the original or the "feat ashley Tomberlin" version) and for some silly suggestions maybe for the fursuit dance - The "Witch Doctor" song (nutty song) |

I don't know about the other DJs at anthrocon but most I've met walk into a situation either preparing a small list of tracks shortly beforehand or by dragging in a crate and playing entirely by the feel of the room. Months in advance is not exactly the time to plan as lots of music gets released over the course of a few months.
Again, I can't speak for other DJs again but the general mindset for most people playing a dance like this is that it's much like a performance, and track selection and set building are generally the part that we like to take on ourselves to expose you to new and fun things.
I guess what I'm trying to say, in a somewhat roundabout and soft way is that I can't imagine most of us 'take requests.' So I wouldn't get your hopes up too much. I'll try and take things into consideration though, and I'm pretty sure you'll hear some Trentemoller.
It's not so much that we don't want to give you what you want to hear, but I know whenever I walk into a club situation, especially an area I haven't played in, I'm excited about new gems I've found or new stormers that are tearing up all over the place, and want to excite people with new and fun things and build a desired atmosphere and mood rather than attempt to play to a specific song list.

^ You may luck out. Depending on what I decide to play that may or may not end up in my setlist. But, for the most part, my esteemed colleague is correct. Requests are not taken, this is not a thing that is done. At least I speak for myself, as PtothaC did. I plan to engineer a set to invoke feelings, desires, and perhaps even nostalgia. Most importantly, I try not to overlap with some of the other performers or 'step on their toes' so that I, among the rest, provide a unique and enjoyable set with no foreseeable repeats, snags, one-ups, and tension-spenders.
I know that Rory was in the way of taking requests, and perhaps even Rigel, given enough time.
However, do not despair, for your suggestions are always welcome. I still don't even know what genre I'll play and I'm working on 3 different sets at the moment.
I may not even decide until that night.
But wait! You can influence my decision! Just go here http://chrispardus.livejournal.com/ and take this poll!

Of course, that poll assumes that we can tell the difference between house and trance and tribal and whatnot...
I think i'd better just trust y'all to pull out some good stuff. You've never let me down before.

For those of you who don't really know the difference between the genres and their bastard children, go here!

It's a fun flash that gives a (albeit highly opinionated) rundown of the genres complete with examples.

Sorry, I come to the dance with a fixed set list prepared in advance, focused on the con theme, and the CDs to play it, plus another backup set to cannibalize if the first one isn't going over well. No room for requests at contime.
I consider requests if they are made ahead of the convention, but they have to fit the con theme I try to stick to, the tone of the set I'm planning to prepare, and my personal feel for whether it will work on the floor.

Personally I'm not above taking a request or two. (as a matter of fact I filled a couple last year) But, I generally only play what fits with my set; be it in mood or beat. If someone asks for something and I think it will fit, I usually try and drop it in. Otherwise, I politely decline.

lol, FYI, I dont expect to hear any of these songs, but it would be cool if I could, Im just saying, if any of the DJs were looking for fun ideas and happened to be short on them, I figured id start this thread for everyone to submit said ideas. Mostly I was bored, and wanted to voice my music preferences hoping by some rare bleak chance that some DJ would go "oooo... shiny" and play one of em. Dont really think it will happen, but the thought is nice to hope for.

I am not surprised. It's really hard to to have a serious request list that you spent time on that is that bloody long. :B
Like, seriously. That playlist would cover at least one ENTIRE night of the dance, if not cross over into the second.
In fact, it just seems to be a dumped playlist. "DiTo - Shadows A-Side - Promo, Release Date: June 2001"

Argh, apologies. It is not "just a dumped playlist" XD The problem is the title theme di.fm uses, when I hear something I like, I add the file info to a text doc on my desktop. Track, artist, extra info and all. Sometimes it proves useful, other times it doesn't. There are quite a few song remixes, being a DJ I'm certain you know this
, and having the name of a certain mix helps when theres 5 or so. Other times I'm busy doing something and I half-ass the paste and close it so I can get back to what I was doing. In this case, that extra info was unnecesarry and I really need to clean it up.
A great chunk of that list is also on youtube for listening so its not difficult to find out how it sounds. I was making recomendations is all.
And thanks for noticing the extra PPK, I didn't know I had it in there already. I just looked at the doc and it says it was started back in November.

Oh yes..Space Buddha a must have.
My preference for any type of trance is it's gotta have a driving heavy beat with a nice bassline and dynamic at the same time to keep it interesting and fresh.
Darudes' Sandstorm (Jan Driver mix) & Astrixs' Techno widows (GMS remix) features these qualities for example.

I can't really say that sandstorm was ever interesting or fresh.

permalinkActually that was precisely what I was listening to when I read this thread
I like it, but the remixed versions. The original just isn't intense enough.

I feel the same way also.
In general most original music tend to sound better when remixed, sometimes not.

I always thought of the song as more someone saying 'look everyone! i bought myself a tb-303 and now i don't need to be good at music anymore!'
I may be a bit bitter just 'cause I heard it so much though. It's certainly no crazy frog.

You gotta give him credit there.
Once you hear sandstorm you can't unhear it, and every time you hear about sand being blown around by the wind you brain starts SCREAMING
DUNNA NUNNA NUH DUNNA DUNNA NUNNA NUH DUDDA DEEDEEDEE DAH NANNA DUDDA DUDDA DA
It just happens.

Again he's(Darude) not the best though his music can put you in a trance state kinda like the Robert Miles effect.
Catch my drift?

Quoting "Protocollie"
"I can't really say that sandstorm was ever interesting or fresh."
Sandstorm isn't really the most interesting or fresh and i do know there's more out there. Though it is accepted in the trance scene as "one of the most listened to songs" and has qualities in it's composition that makes it interesting/fresh still.
Or else the music would not be played no longer or requested.
Maybe you might have a better "trance" song off of your head that you would like to contribute?
The secret is in you.....

I don't think it's really accepted in the trance scene period, honestly. At all. Deep trance people would classify that as 'club' or 'not' trance, it's a club-ready bangfest with hints at trance elements but no real... trance. It's also amongst the most formulaic dance songs I've ever heard, rearry.
And off the top of my head?
The Rafael Frost remix of White Russian by Street Punk.
Or Maor Levi - Reflect.
And I'm not sure if it qualifies, but let's throw the S-Boyz remix of razorblade by coburn in there.
That's a pretty neat song.
Also, number of requests is no indication of quality of song. People are allowed to like it all they want, but generally you'll find that the preferences of someone 'outside' a specific genre, maybe a more casual listener, will lean towards more accessible elements of that genre than deep experimentation in it. Another indicator of this would be that Axel F by Crazy Frog hit number 1 on the UK charts.
And I'd like to clarify so people don't think I'm making a personal attack on taste - really, I'm not questioning your liking the song, just injecting my two cents. There's lots of tracks which are good by people's standards but not maybe those who are really into the genre the song's in. I'm a huge Coldplay fan, and I really liked Speed of Sound, but I imagine that most people deep into rock would probably say it wasn't that great or innovative a song, especially considering it was basically a rehash of Clocks from their previous album.
I'm not trying to question personal taste, so I apologise if I sound aggressive. I'm just remarking on this particular song as its own entity.

I kinda struggle to get my music recognised but i have hd some played on a fur radio station and some USA furs liked them so thought id ask. Thanks.

From my perspective, I'd have to hear it first. I mean, there's a lot that goes into it, some portions of it simply being it needs to be mixed and mastered properly to sound good on a large system. If the stuff's good enough, I'd be willing to do the master or mixdown.
As a disclaimer, though, this is not at all a guarantee. Just a possibility.
