I'm having a bit of trouble with the pdf for the PA tax application though. When I open it the pages appear almost blank, except for a couple of the header bars. Any idea if this is a problem on my end? Thanks!

Try right-clicking and "save as", and then open the file with a PDF viewer.

Can you tell me the exact URL of the document that you are having trouble with? (Right-click and choose "Copy Link Location" or similar, then paste it into a comment here.)
It's not that I can't check, but I want to make sure we're talking about the exact same URL before I start troubleshooting.

I'm using Mac OS 10.3.9 and opening the file using Preview, which I usually don't have any problems with as far as viewing PDFs. I seem to remember that's what I used last year but I could be wrong! I have a multitude of programs and operating systems available to me though so if I just need to switch to something else for this one file that's fine. Thanks for your help!

permalinkIt's a crappy PDF file, likely the result of a scan. Xyloart, if you open the file using Adobe Acrobat Reader, that ought to display it at least well enough to allow proper printing.
(Giza/Kage, doesn't the PA Department of Revenue have a better rendition of this form?)

I have a G4 Powerbook running 10.3.9 and was able to reproduce the issue! That is really... weird... I've never seen a PDF do that before.
I was able to view the PDFs just fine on my G5 iMac with 10.4.10.
I'm not a PDF guru, so the only workaround I can think of would be to grab a copy of Adobe Reader and use that.
I also made a note on the Dealer page, just in case anyone else runs into the same issue. Thanks for the help in tracking this down!

To get technical about it...
The reason that Adobe Reader worked is that it uses a completely different PDF rendering engine than Preview (or for that matter all of system 10.3) uses. The PDF in question was a version 6 compatible PDF. Since the version of Acrobat Reader you used is presumably the most recent one, 8.11 or at least something 6.x or above, it'd open in Acrobat just fine, but not in 10.3's Preview because it didn't support some aspect of the newer pdf file (most likely the newer types of compression that can be used). In 10.4 the system PDF rendering engine was updated to support the newer PDF standards, so it could read the file.
While the Adobe Acrobat reader is more compatible with newer files, and certain fancier aspects of PDFs, the built in support in OS X runs circles around the Adobe software speed wise. So, once again, as with many bits of software and technology there are pros and cons. I'd recommend using Preview if it works, which it usually does.
Adobe has been pushing the new standards lately, which is nice, but not everything has caught up yet, so it's not always the best thing to use the latest and greatest formats from them.
Hope that clears up some questions.
