First thanks to everyone (all 600+ ) who turned in a survey!!! Fantastic As soon as the Anthrocon officials send me the contacts for the winning badge numbers I will be in touch and get the gift certificates out. Please be patient...they are very busy with post con necessities (probably including sleep!). If you wish to be put on a list of people who receive results shoot me an email to I will ask the IRB for permission for you to mail in any surveys which you wish to send after the close of Anthrocon. The IRB is not often very quick to respond. I will post a new message with a mailing address as soon as I get approval. See you next year! |

permalinkAnd I was too late ...
But yes, I think it was a very interesting survey and would like to see the results too once they are evaluated.
Especially things like how many otherkin think they are furs and vice versa.

permalinkIt was definitely interesting to see that our little shared interest has grown large enough to merit peer-reviewed study
I participated in the survey, and look forward to seeing what comes of it. I'll send you an e-mail to that effect later.
This research aside, I've been secretly hoping that the fandom will at some point catch the attention of an anthropologist or two. I'm not an academic (nor do I play one on TV), but I've done reading in the area of proxemics (Edward Hall's The Hidden Dimension), and it's fascinating to see how the standard cultural rules on this are bent when you put on a fursuit. You can observe stark differences between skin-to-fur/fur-to-fur contact versus skin-to-skin; different body language comes into play, new gestures... it easily merits ethnographic study.
